Joe Fresh | Hangtag Redesigns for Down Apparel

Last fall/winter Joe Fresh used these hangtags on their puffy down vests for their womenswear line. I've chosen to revamp and redesign them, experimenting with both a vertical and horizontal layout. Once I started I just couldn't stop, lol. Man, I love me some design.

The first four redesign ideas in the second image were designed while thinking about if the brand released a limited line, or an item for a special occasion. I was thinking they could also be used for lingerie due to the flowy and feminine feel.

Fashion Illustration | Lookbook & Catalogue Design for Banana Republic

During my final year of the Illustration degree program at Sheridan, I took it upon myself to use a great deal of the skill I learned during my internship at Snoflake Fashion and Futurstate, and create a lookbook and catalogue for the clothing company Banana Republic, owned by Gap Inc.

I chose this as I am a big fan of their pieces and interior store aesthetic. I love the branding of the company, but I chose to tackle re-branding the company for a specific season. I created this project in the Visual Narrative course during second semester. In doing this I was able to keep my thesis cohesive, while branching off into another direction of fashion: design.

For this project I designed a new logotype, contrasting the fine and refined with the rough and rugged. I loved this contrast, especially the earthy feel of the backgrounds and logotype, tying it in to the travel-like amazonian aesthetic the brand first started out as.

I created technical flats, garment narratives, traditional fashion illustrations representing characters for certain garments, as well as hangtag and shopping bag design.

This lookbook/catalogue was printed and bound and available to flip through during the 2011 Sheridan Illustration grad show in April. The physical size is 8" x 6".

Beyoncé | 4 (Logotype + Cover Re-Design)

I recently bought the album '4' by Beyoncé and love the cover of the regular edition of the CD. I started thinking though, that the cover didn't really fit with the entirety of the music from the album, only the last track: Run The World (Girls). The album is mostly ballads which I love, and sets it apart from a lot of music circulating amongst the mainstream market currently. There is no auto-tune and the majority of the music is stripped down with a very 80's feel.

Because of these things, I chose to create my own logotype for the album, as well as a cover more suited to the type of music presented in the album. My favorites from these four are the first two. They have a classy flair to them, at the same time remaining unique so her direction in music for this particular record can be seen.

Company Re-Branding: Logotype + Hangtags | Stitches

Thinking about different clothing stores while wandering around the mall and eventually coming across a Stitches made me realize the logotype for their branding seemed very outdated. I didn't understand the serif font they used and it just felt too cheap.

The clothing itself is both inexpensive and geared towards the ages 14-18, but I feel like even if the clothing is affordable, the branding itself can be luxurious. It's one thing to brand in this way, but keeping the target markets interest is another.

I played with a lot of sans serif fonts, but some reminded me of other clothing retailers, such as Winners. Ultimately, I decided to further explore the last design on the right of the first image. I then played with different colour schemes and hangtag design ideas, both front and back. On the first two hangtag designs I was playing with a different sans serif for the "1975" but the helvetica reminded me too much of the Gap, so I scrapped it.

The company is using a lot of light blue on their website due to summer branding, and I feel it works with the target audience, but I also feel it's more of a seasonal colour and could be used for a hangtag design during the summer months. The last design however, is my favorite. I actually went backwards and tried another serif font, but using the placement I created which made a whole new look for the brand. I like the colour and I think it also has that Canadian connection without reminding the customer too much of a brand like Roots.

Blake McGrath: Burn The Floor | CD Cover + Packaging

Blake McGrath announced his next single off of his album "Time to Move" recently. It's called Burn The Floor and is a great dance record that I hoped he would pick for the single. He held a vote on his facebook page with a choice of three songs: Burn The Floor, Penthouse (feat. Trish) and Lovesick.

Upon announcing the new single, he posted a picture of the cover. I decided to design it myself and see what I could come up with for packaging, also.

There are two final designs because I decided to push the text closer together for the cover, as I thought in the end it matched more cohesively to the back cover. Also, the tracks are fictitious, using Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" single as inspiration for the tracklisting. Photography is copyright respective owner.

I heard about this band when they were in a voting contest for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. I decided to give them a listen and liked what I heard. I researched some of their CDs and decided to re-vamp the covers for a more contemporary and modern look.

First, I was playing around with a song of theirs called "Before I'm Old" and added that to the tracklisting of their CD "Lasting Echo."

The second image is another round of packaging using their song "Strangers in the Dark" as inspiration. I felt perhaps this track was more suitable for the cover given the photograph by Matt Clayton.

I don't know how the band would feel about hot pink, but I think they are the most unique and eye-catching so they are my favorite of the bunch.

Re-Branding The Warehouse Diner

I've decided to rebrand a diner I walk by occasionally. I really dislike the sign, so I was inspired to re-brand the company in a similar way to that of a graphic design project I had in fourth year. I really enjoyed re-branding 575 Jeans so why not?

The first image is signage exploration. On the left is a very contemporary design that looks very urban and rich in its simplicity. I personally like them but given the atmosphere of the already established diner I felt it didn't quite fit. Sticking with the green colour scheme of the already existing sign I explored further. Also, I began to play with "bar & grill" instead of the word "diner".

I really enjoyed the second to last design on the right, so I continued to explore that as coaster and napkin designs, which are the final two images.

Stanislao Moulinsky are a band I watched perform at Piazza della Repubblica in Firenze while on my trip. They were one of many bands performing for the La Notte Blu event going on at the time. I think they're a very talented band and I wanted to try my hand at designing and re-designing CD covers for them for fun. I'll probably design even more later, these ideas just popped in my head while taking a shower this morning so I had an urge to design.

From Italy back to Canada

I returned to Canada less than a week ago, and just yesterday officially graduated with honours from the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Illustration) program at Sheridan! Yeah! Degree. Feels good.

Italy was amazing, I will blog about it soon and share many pictures in my other blog Aesthetic Enthusiast. For now, here's a picture taken in Montalcino (AKA the most beautiful place I've ever seen) to tide you over.

I've chosen to create a menswear lookbook/catalogue for Gap Inc. clothing retailer Banana Republic for Visual Narrative class. I'm doing the graphic design layout, as well as designing new branding materials such as logo, hangtag and shopping bags. In addition I am creating technical flat illustrations/creative fashion illustrations of garments in four catagories: Comfort Casual, Professional Poise, Stylish Sophistication and Fearless Finesse. I'm juxtaposing a rough-and-ready traditional drawing/painting style throughout the book, contrasting with the clean-cut look of the technical illustrations and actual Banana Republic garments.

In this piece is Zooey Deschanel from the band She & Him. The sound of the band is very vintage and loungey so I wanted to play with that in the colours and feel for this piece. I chose a polka-dot decorative motif for the piece due to that soothing feeling reminiscent of past music.

Jewelry Design Side Project

As many of you know, I have a great interest in fashion which is shown in the majority of my work. I'm starting to branch into creating actual items to be worn.

I'm currently creating and selling handmade jewelry. A selection are currently for purchase as a fundraising effort toward our fourth year grad show. I have an Etsy account already made to sell these creations.

They are created using silk, wire, and recycled objects. They are within' the $15-20 range, so very affordable and environmentally friendly at that. In addition some are supporting not only my grad show year, but my entire cohort. If interested please contact me.

Here is another cover for Haywire. I had another idea in my head and I couldn't resist giving it a try. I thought using white font for the title would be more fitting since I found the white string to be a main symbol of the book, representing both the purity and innocence of the child.

A tear in the window shade angles light into a cardboard box where the baby lies dreamless. She is in her best clothes, as if dressed for a tea party. Virgil strokes her soft hair and pale cheek. He ties the lid closed with white string.

Then his mind explodes into a pile of loose hay.

I designed the coupon and signage for the Futurstate booth at The Clothing Show in Toronto. I also helped with sales and set-up. It was a very cool experience to work behind the scenes and see what others were doing as well.

I'm currently interning with Snoflake and Futurstate for the summer. Both are fashion brands and so far it's been an amazing experience and I feel like I'm learning something new every day.

I'm currently working on illustration, graphic art, and even fashion art from time-to-time. I've designed signage, posters, banners, buttons and I'm currently working on a new catalogue design.

I plan to post many of the designs I have come up with so far, but for now here is a recent illustration I've completed. It's my first fashion technical. There's still some tweaking to do, as well as the back, but it's been really fun to work on.

Tom Ford

So this was something random I sketched while taking breaks from an interpretive assignment I was working on over break. It is a quick sketch with photo reference of fashion designer/director Tom Ford. He's one of my inspirations and is someone I would really like to meet one day.

Anyway, I'm currently in the process of painting this sketch, and I should be putting some illustrations up shortly, as well.

This was an assignment for Interpretive Illustration class. We were to illustrate the coffee sleeve for Terminal 1 at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. I really wanted to go narrative with this piece and create a dreamy and calming atmosphere as plane trips can be chaotic and rushed.

Interpretive Illustration class assignment. We were to create a recipe and I chose "how to be Lady Gaga." I wanted to branch into pop culture, and it was interesting finding ways to incorporate what I wanted to into the piece.

The original project is a "recipe for disaster" and the other reason why I chose Lady Gaga is because I wanted to incorporate this in some way. She sings about the disadvantages of fame in some of her music and I thought the idea of "fame kills" was interesting so I chose to work around that.

Today I painted on an 8" x 8" wood block in Illustrative Drawing & Painting class. I found working on such a small scale for an acrylic portrait painting to be challenging but on the other hand some tasks seemed less daunting than working large scale.

Here is my illustration of a perfectionist for Interpretive class. It's heavily based on Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man." The idea is the symmetrical perfection of a male model. When models are in photos and on the catwalk, there's a perfectionist quality about them.

Synthetic Velvet (CD Cover) Revised

Previously I posted this CD cover, but it's been revised since the last time. I have also completed the inside, back, and spine so far. The project is still on-going and will also include a poster.

I will post the rest and the finished result later on. For now, here's the final CD cover for a taste of what the inspiration for the rest of the project will be.

Here is my most recent illustration. We were to illustrate a new subscription card for The New Yorker magazine using the Monocle Man symbol. I also included the butterfly in my design. It's designed to be kind-of humorous and charming.

We had to choose a section of the magazine to illustrate for, and of course I chose the humor section.

This is my CD cover for Graphic Design class. I'm really enjoying design and positioning type and using strategic font families and such. As you can see I'm really into Helvetica right now, haha.

Hopefully I'll have some new illustrations to upload by the end of the week.
