Invisible Cities

This is a narrative project we were given before winter break.  It was a challenging project that was spread over a couple of months.  We were given specific size requirements and to only create four illustrations for the short story we chose.  I chose Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino.

I decided to represent one half of the city (carnival) with a peacock, and the other (dull city life) with a pigeon.  At the end of the story it's revealed that the pigeons made up the city and once they flew away that half of the city disappeared, and the carnival remained until the pigeons returned.

For this project I used ink on gummed watercolour paper.

Bliss

I have just completed this piece.  It was originally a sketch idea for one of my Interpretive projects.  I scrapped it for another idea, let them eat cake, but I still thought this was really cute and fun, so I wanted to paint it.

It didn't scan as well as I thought it would for some reason.  Sorry about that.

I'm currently working on an advertisement illustration.  I wanted to practice a different avenue.  I'm excited to finish and start painting it.

Media Methods Projects

I'm posting a couple of Media Methods & Materials projects from second semester.  It was fun to experiment with different media and mold projects into something that I wanted to do.  

The first was a collage project based on a description of a character from a short story.  The second project was to create something that was an impossible possibility.  I chose to do a dessert scene with figures riding camels in the background, and a steam geyser forming the shape of penguins.

I will update soon with a new piece I have been working on.

The Scarlet Letter (Redemption)

This is the Electronic Media book jacket project we were given in Electronic Media class.  I learned a lot about InDesign from this project and now really enjoy working with the program.

Divide and Conquer

This is a personal piece I started a couple of months ago. School projects were getting in the way so I had to put it off for a while, but I decided to finish it just recently.

This piece is something different for me, because I have never really done a piece that has been so personal to my own feelings and emotions. I would like any viewer to create their own meaning, but for me it's about the struggles with unrequited love (or rather, what I thought was love at the time) and then finally conquering it in the end and being able to move on.

I used my digital camera to photograph this piece. I will try to scan it at a later date.

During the Art Jam at Sheridan I started a second piece on a vinyl record.  I didn't have enough time to finish it so I decided to work on it more in my own time.  I have now completed the piece.

Lost In Translation

This is another illustration I did for Interpretive class.  We were to create an editorial illustration based on an article from a magazine.  It was a really interesting experience because for the first time it felt like I was creating a professional illustration for an actual client.  I really enjoyed this project.

The article was called "Lost In Translation" and was about Latin terms for plants being used more than the English terms.  My interpretation of the article was that it was poking fun at elitism in the plant/gardening "world."

This illustration depicts one of these elitists, and the flower is what's causing his up-turned nose, normally a sign of snobbery.
